Standards when Transcribing Val's Missionary Journals

Posted November 24, 2025 by Archive Owner

1. Ensure all text "wraps", or flows to the very right of the text field. Why? Because Kindex's transcription service places line endings from the original into the transcribed text. If printed, this creates a waste of space in each sheet of paper, and increase the cost of each book. How? REMOVE unnecessary returns. The "Toggle Line Breaks" button removes all returns automatically, but be sure to re-add all necessary paragraphs. 2. Leave casing and misspells as they are, but add corrections in brackets where necessary. Why? When transcribing, matching the casing and actual letters makes for a more genuine transcription. But to enable searching and indexing, correcting certain misspellings by placing corrected words/names within brackets is recommended. How? Example A, proper noun correction: "I met President Hinkley {Hinckley]." Example B, a word likely to be searched: "My wife is preganant [pregnant]." Example C, leave it be: "I didn't like there food." 3. For quotes, use curly quotes (“Hi!”) instead of double tick marks ("Hi!") Left curl 4. • Hyphens vs en dashes vs em dashes • Plus sign implies…(&, +, or “and”) • What to do with page numbers • Enter/Return vs Shift+Return
